3D Today

Along with our down economy, the sales of TVs has been decreasing. According to chinatechnews.com, in 2009 the sales for TVs had gone down 24% during the months of April to August at Skyworth industries. Its clear that television companies had to do something to get their TV sales back up. Panasonic, Sony, Samsung, Sharp, LG and other smaller companies came out with a 3D hdtv. The new 3D tv made its first appearence at CES(consumers electronics show). Some companies have already begun selling the new TV, prices range between $1,000 and $2,800 depending on working condition. These prices are about the same as a regular HD tv without the 3D capability.

"Personally 3D things give me a headache, so i would not be interested in buying one, lower prices or not," said Kali Elliott.

Panasonic's 3D TV comes with its own pair of 3D glasses, although the glasses need a battery, similar to a watch battery. Most of the other companies also have glasses included, minus Sony's version. The glasses all include something called a "LC shutter system". This allows the right and left lens to darken and lighten quickly without the user noticing, this creates the 3D effect. Some of the TVs like panasonic require a 3D compatable Blu-ray player. The 3D tv is expected to be released in the Spring of this year.

3D has been around since the 1950's, and manufacturers are just now using it to their advantage. With newer technology and better special effects, 3D is really making a name for itself. Of course, one of the biggest draw backs to watching a film in 3D, is having to wear the glasses. One thing that would make 3D truly awesome, is to be able to get the effect without having to see through glasses. Unfortunatley, that just isn't possible at this point in time. The technology needed to see 3D without glasses won't be around for another ten years, according to Taesoo Park, a cheif researcher enigineer at LG.

"Wow, it's crazy to think that one day it will be possible to watch 3D without glasses, chinese people are so smart," said Dorie Clevenger.
